Day four and going STRONG on Kickstarter! Some great questions are coming in, including “Why yams?”
Leading up to the launch of YamStreet’s Urban Pajama Pants, a friend asked how exactly I could make pants out of yams. I think he was a disappointed when I told him that Urban Pajama Pants are really made from super-soft 100% cotton flannel.
Yams are fibrous and, who knows, someday could be used in textile production. But until then, the YamStreet yam is more symbol than raw material.
Our yam represents the grassroots where good ideas sprout (like a San Francisco neighborhood). It captures the spirit of living locally (in your Urban Pajama Pants). It suggests sweetness, home cooked meals and basic values that ground us and connect us to one another (like quality products made by people you know).
In a changing world, there is something comforting and fundamental about the hardy yam. The yam is a staple food throughout the world. It is a cultural touchstone in the U.S. and around the globe, and is believed by some to have magical qualities.
Speaking of magic: the YamStreet yam was designed by California artist Tom Nikosey, the same talented guy behind the wordmark for the SF Giants baseball team!
